لم يزل الملايين الذين يعيشون في فقر مدقع يمثلون عارا أخلاقيا. فالفقر ليس مسألة اقتصادية فحسب، بل هو ظاهرة متعددة الأبعاد تشمل نقص كل من الدخل والقدرات الأساسية للعيش بكرامة.
ويعاني الأشخاص الذين يعيشون في فقر من عديد أشكال الحرمان المترابطة والمتعاضدة التي تمنعهم من إعمال حقوقهم وتديم فقرهم بما فيها:
ظروف العمل الخطيرة
وغياب الإسكان المأمون
وغياب الطعام المغذي
ووجود تفاوت في إتاحة الوصول إلى العدالة
وهذا العام هو الذكرى السنوية لإعلان الجمعية العامة، بموجب قرارها 196/47 المؤرخ 22 كانون الأول/ديسمبر1992، يوم 17 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر بوصفه اليوم الدولي للقضاء على الفقر. وهذا العام هو كذلك الذكرى السنوية الثانية والثلاثين للدعوة إلى العمل التي وجهها الأب جوزِف ريسنسكي — ومثلت الإلهام الحقيقي لإعلان يوم 17 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر يوما عالميا لإنهاء الفقر المدقع —ومن ثم اعتراف الأمم المتحدة بذلك اليوم بوصفه اليوم الدولي للقضاء على الفقر.
موضوع عام 2020: العمل معًا لتحقيق العدالة الاجتماعية والبيئية للجميع
يبرز موضوع اليوم لهذا العام التحدي المتمثل في تحقيق العدالة الاجتماعية والبيئية للجميع. فالاعتراف المتزايد بتعدد أبعاد الفقر يعني أن هاتين المسألتين متشابكتان تشابكا لا ينفصل، فضلا عن أن العدالة الاجتماعية لا يمكن أن تتحقق بالكامل دون تصحيح الظلم البيئي في نفس الوقت. وفي حين أُحرز تقدم في التصدي لقضية ضعف المداخيل، فأن النجاح كان أقل في ما يتصل بأبعاد الفقر الأخرى المهمة، بما في ذلك الأثر المتزايد بسرعة للبيئة ، في إطار نهج أكثر شمولية.
والفقراء الذين يعيشون في فقر مدقع هم أول من يقدمون على العمل الناجز داخل مجتمعاتهم للاستجابةً للفقر وتغير المناخ والتحديات البيئية. ومع ذلك، فجهودهم وخبراتهم غالبًا ما تُهمل ولا تحظى بالتقدير؛ حيث يُتغاضى عن قدراتهم على المساهمة بشكل إيجابي في الحلول؛ ولا يُعترف بهم بوصفهم قوى دافعة للتغيير، وأصواتهم غير مسموعة وبخاصة في الهيئات الدولية.
وكل ذلك يجب أن يتغير. يجب تقدير مشاركة الفقراء والمعسرين ومعارفهم ومساهماتهم وخبراتهم واحترامها والاعتراف بأثرها في جهودنا لبناء عالم منصف ومستدام تسود فيه العدالة الاجتماعية والبيئية للجميع

Millions of people living in extreme poverty still posed a moral shame. Poverty is not only an economic issue, it is a multidimensional phenomenon that includes a lack of both income and the basic capabilities to live in dignity.
People living in poverty suffer from many interdependent and mutually reinforcing deprivations that prevent them from realizing their rights and perpetuate their poverty, including:
Dangerous working conditions
And the absence of safe housing
And the absence of nutritious food
The existence of disparities in access to justice
This year is the anniversary of the General Assembly, by its resolution 47/196 of 22 December 1992, declaring 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year is also the 32nd anniversary of Father Joseph Resinsky's call to action - and the real inspiration for declaring October 17 as the International Day to End Extreme Poverty - and subsequently by the United Nations recognizing that day as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
2020 theme: Working together to achieve social and environmental justice for all
Today's theme for this year highlights the challenge of achieving social and environmental justice for all. The growing recognition of the multiplicity of dimensions of poverty means that these two issues are intertwined and inseparable, as well as that social justice cannot be fully achieved without correcting environmental injustice at the same time. While progress has been made in addressing the issue of low incomes, success has been less on other important dimensions of poverty, including the rapidly increasing impact of the environment, as part of a more holistic approach.
Poor people living in extreme poverty are the first to take action within their communities to respond to poverty, climate change and environmental challenges. However, their efforts and expertise are often neglected and underappreciated. Overlooked their ability to contribute positively to solutions; They are not recognized as drivers of change, and their voices are not being heard, especially in international bodies.
