The journey of nearly 200 immigrants from Senegal to the Canary Islands turned into tragedy. At least 140 of them were killed off the coast of Senegal, after their boat crashed in the worst accident recorded at sea in 2020.

The International Organization for Migration said in a statement on Thursday that it is deeply saddened by the tragedy. "We call for unity between governments, partners and the international community to dismantle the smuggling and trafficking networks that exploit desperate youth," said Bakary Doumbia, head of the IOM mission in Senegal.
According to media sources, the Senegalese and Spanish navies, and fishermen who were near the place, rescued 59 people, and recovered the remains of 20 others. This tragedy comes in the wake of the sinking of four boats in the central Mediterranean last week and another ship in the English Channel.

The International Organization for Migration said in a statement on Thursday that it is deeply saddened by the tragedy. "We call for unity between governments, partners and the international community to dismantle the smuggling and trafficking networks that exploit desperate youth," said Bakary Doumbia, head of the IOM mission in Senegal.
According to media sources, the Senegalese and Spanish navies, and fishermen who were near the place, rescued 59 people, and recovered the remains of 20 others. This tragedy comes in the wake of the sinking of four boats in the central Mediterranean last week and another ship in the English Channel.
"It is important that we call for strengthening legal channels to undermine the smugglers' business model and prevent loss of life," said Bakary Dombeia.
414 deaths in 2020
Community members informed the International Organization for Migration that the ship left the port city of Mbor in western Senegal on Saturday (24 October), bound for the Canary Islands. But the boat caught fire a few hours after departure, and capsized near Saint Louis on Senegal's northwest coast.
The government of Senegal and the International Organization for Migration have organized a mission to travel to St. Louis to assess survivors' needs and provide immediate psychosocial assistance.
With this tragic boat sinking, at least 414 people will have died in 2020 along this sea route, according to the International Organization for Migration's Missing Migrants Project, which recorded 210 deaths there in 2019.
Increase the number of immigrants
According to the International Organization for Migration, the number of departures from West Africa to the Canary Islands has increased dramatically in recent weeks. In September alone, 14 boats with 663 migrants from Senegal left for the Canary Islands. Of those trips, 26% had an accident or drowned.
The organization estimates that nearly 11,000 people have immigrated to the Canary Islands this year, compared to 2,557 arrivals during the same period last year. This is still well below the peak seen in 2006, when more than 32,000 people arrived in the Canary Islands

وبحسب مصادر إعلامية، أنقذت البحرية السنغالية والإسبانية، وصيّادون كانوا على مقربة من المكان، 59 شخصا، واستردّوا رفات 20 آخرين. وتأتي هذه المأساة في أعقاب غرق أربعة قوارب في وسط البحر المتوسط الأسبوع الماضي وسفينة أخرى في القنال الإنكليزي.

وقد أبلغ أفراد المجتمع المحلي المنظمة الدولية للهجرة بأن السفينة غادرت مدينة مبور الساحلية غربي السنغال يوم السبت (24 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر) متجهة إلى جزر الكناري. لكن اشتعلت النيران في القارب بعد ساعات قليلة من المغادرة، وانقلب بالقرب من سانت لويس على الساحل الشمالي الغربي للسنغال.
وقد نظمت حكومة السنغال والمنظمة الدولية للهجرة مهمة السفر إلى سانت لويس لتقييم احتياجات الناجين وتقديم المساعدة النفسية والاجتماعية الفورية.
ومع هذا الغرق المأساوي للقارب، يكون على الأقل، 414 شخصا قد لقوا حتفهم في عام 2020 على طول هذا المسار البحري، وفقا لمشروع المهاجرين المفقودين التابع للمنظمة الدولية للهجرة، والذي سجّل 210 حالات وفاة هناك في عام 2019.
زيادة عدد المهاجرين
وبحسب المنظمة الدولية للهجرة، فقد زاد عدد المغادرين من غرب أفريقيا إلى جزر الكناري بشكل كبير في الأسابيع الأخيرة. وفي أيلول/سبتمبر وحده، غادر 14 قاربا على متنه 663 مهاجرا من السنغال إلى جزر الكناري. من بين تلك الرحلات، 26% تعرّضت لحادث أو غرق.
